Tor des Géants: Trekking the Untamed Beauty of the Alps' Highest Peaks

The Tour of the Giants—or Tor des Géants as it’s known in the Valdôtain patois of the Italy’s spectacular Valle d’Aosta region—immerses you in the overwhelming scenery of the highest peaks of the Alps. Starting below the Monte Rosa, the second highest peak in the Alps, we parallel a line of 4000-meter peaks—including the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc—that form the Italian-Swiss border. It’s a classic trek for those who want to experience the unforgettable mountain panorama of the Alps in a wild and quieter setting.

The most surprising peak on the route is the Matterhorn, which viewed at close proximity from the Italian side is immense, but almost unrecognizable to those expecting the sharp iconic ridgelines seen in most photos. The off-the-beaten track tranquility of Breuil-Cervinia also stands in sharp contrast to the bustling tourist scene in Zermatt, just five miles away.

Gran Paradiso National Park is an earthly paradise. The park encompasses the highest peak lying wholly within Italy—Gran Paradiso (4061m). It was once the private hunting reserve of Italy’s King Vittorio Emanuele, until he designated the area as Italy’s first national park. It’s a protected natural region where you’ll have your best chance at viewing Alpine ibex, chamois, fox, and marmots, and usually at very close range.
